Heat Relief!

Skinny white kid that thinks he is all that!
Yes we feed him!

Kelsie and Katie doing crazy jumps off of the boat!

Jayden just looking cute and even he was having a good time jumping in!

My self portrait just to prove that I actually had on a swimsuit, it was really that hot!
I even got in the lake and went tubing which I must say I don't really enjoy that much!

Scott chillin while the kids are swimming!

Kelsie and Ryan having a "war" on the tube Kelsie lost!

I know that 90+ degrees is really not that hot to some of you...but most of you that are used to those kind of temperatures have air conditioning! For us that is not the case! We usually don't need it, so we have to come up with alternatives to beat the heat! Lucky for us Scott is totally amazing and fixed our boat that has not been running all summer! Yippee! It might have gotten fixed sooner but remember he spent the last half of June and the first part of July barely functioning - well he is back folks and the boat is running just in the nick of time to escape the heat!
The kids had a great time jumping off of the boat, tubing and the kids even tried wake boarding!
But it is still hot....

**Nothing to report on the adoption front birth parent interview didn't happen this week - nothing is happening - my kids will be in Haiti forever!

Praying You Are Doing Better

We have not heard how Avrie is doing, it has been awhile since we have had any news. She has been heavy on my heart and mind today and I am trying to stay busy, hoping the time will pass and news will come, so far only time seems to pass and each day that goes by without any news is hard. Avrie will have her birth parent interview on Monday, hopefully we will hear good news that the interview went well, and we will hear some good news on how Avrie is doing.

The waiting is hard, knowing that another child is sick and there is nothing I can do to help or give comfort is hard. Passing the 2 year mark on this whole adoption process is hard. Loosing two babies is hard. Watching Destina grow up and change every time I see her is hard. Not knowing when the end will come is hard.

I pray daily for the health of the girls, for the process to go faster for all adoptions. I pray that our files will be released from IBESR that those working on adoptions will have their hearts softened and WANT to move the files and get these kids home. I pray that the girls will know how much I love them and that they will remain healthy.

I have to have faith that these girls will be home and we can look back on this whole experience and see the hand of the Lord in all things.

I have hope for the future that we will be altogether, that our family will be whole.

Favorite Pictures

These pictures were taken on our last day in Haiti. Destina is a little tired of me pointing my camera in her face at this point, and it was hard to get her to pose and let me take pictures of her. Avrie is showing some personality for the first time all week, actually this is one of the only times she was standing by herself, the rest of the time she was too weak and needed to be held, the sucker gave her the distraction I needed to get a couple of shots of her by herself. And Darlene was new to all this picture taking business and worked it like a pro she has such a radiant smile when she lets her guard down.

I am trying real hard to stay positive that we will hear good news this week, that Avrie is doing better and that our files are out of IBESR, otherwise I could resort to wallowing is self pity and go crazy! (Which will be the case next week, if there is no good news this week!)

Cousins

My older sister came with me on our trip to Haiti in January, and became attached to a little girl named Darlene. She really wanted to adopt Darlene but her husband was not on board with the whole adoption thing. Then in March another family wanted to adopt Darlene and my sister was really sad knowing that her chance to adopt her was gone. In May the family that wanted to adopt Darlene couldn't and Darlene was again available for adoption. My sister knew she had to adopt her and convinced her husband to jump on board (the crazy adoption train)! In the meantime I have become friends with the mom of the other family that wanted to adopt Darlene and feel her sadness at not being able to adopt her. She will be Darlene's long distance Auntie!
It will be a great story to tell her one day about the three moms that love her - her birth mom, her adoptive mom, her Auntie that wanted her as her own! It is sad that there are so many children needing homes and that the few children that have loving homes waiting for them have to keep waiting and waiting.
It will be fun times when the cousins get together and both Darlene and Destina will share a bond that we will never comprehend, they will have someone who they can relate to and who understands what life was like "before"! Too bad they will live 900 miles away from each other!

8 Months and Counting in the Black Hole!

It has been 8 months since we entered IBESR it is time for our files to come out! It feels like we have entered a black hole and can't seem to find out way out! Until we get out of this step it is hard to be optimistic about when the girls will be coming home. It is really frustrating to be waiting for so long knowing that our files are just sitting on someones desk waiting for a signature. These girls need to come home!!

* Avrie update - She is doing better and is eating better evderyday and still has 1 nanny to 2 kids!

Anderson Cooper!

This was sent via my Haiti forum today. Anderson Cooper is doing a special on Restaveks in Haiti. The part that makes my blood boil is that there are so many families that are wanting to help, families that are trying all that they can to make life better for the children in Haiti, even if it is only one child at a time and the "powers that be" make it so difficult to do this. Yet all out slavery, which they fought to remove from their country, is going on right under their noses and they turn a blind eye to that. Where is the justice?
Read the article watch the program, don't turn a blind eye!

Diving Lessons

One of the days while we were out at the pool all the kids were watching another little girl diving into the pool, that is all it takes for some of these kids (Destina) to want to try it as well. Once she attempted to start diving the other kids followed. It was really fun to watch the all kids from the O trying to dive like the little girl who actually knew what she was doing. So after watching for a minute I handed off Avrie and decided to give them some diving lessons. I tried hard to remember what was taught in my kids swim lessons and then attempt to communicate the right way to dive. We started out standing but that started hurting my back when I was helping each kid dive in. So we went down to our knees and that worked out a little better. The would take their turn and then hurry out of the water to wait in line again. We did this for about half an hour they were so excited to learn how to dive. Some of them would dive in then do a flip under water, some belly flopped but all the kids had so much fun!

I was soaking wet by the time I was done, should have put the suite on! You can see Avrie, in the background, being loved on by Theresa, a nurse volunteer who took great care of Avrie before we got to Haiti!

An Afternoon Adventure!

Scott wrote this post while we were still in Haiti. He wrote it as if I was writing it but it really is Scott telling the story. This was a once in a lifetime adventure at least for him because he has sworn that he is never going to Haiti again. Scott is doing much better coming close to normal except that he gets tired easily and does not have as much energy as he would like to have, which if you know Scott that is not normal!

Today Scott went with a group to the orphanage to set up the solar panel system and do a little work around the house. They left first thing in the afternoon and planned on getting back about dinner time. The work at the orphanage went well but as it goes with everything in Haiti they didn’t leave as early as they had planned. Before I go any further let me give you a brief picture of what the weather has been doing this week. Mornings have been super, with broken clouds and temperatures in the low 80’s. Afternoons have been a little warmer and about dinnertime the thunder begins and the rain just dumps.
So they are at the orphanage loading up the van and junkie old pick-up truck to head back to the hotel. The sun was out and it was a beautiful Haiti afternoon. Scott three other dads, one teenage son, and a friend of one of the other moms get the bonus of seeing Haiti from the back of a truck – which is something you just can’t go without. It’s probably only 15 miles as the crow flies but it takes at least an hour to make the drive (because - well – that’s a whole other story) After a few minutes of enjoying the local scenery it began to sprinkle – then rain – then all out downpour!

Scott and the other truck bound victims got as wet as you can get and were on parade for all to see. "Look at the soaking wet white people standing in the back of the pickup truck." Oh I forgot to mention, they had to stand up because they were also hauling about 20 suitcases from all the supplies we had brought down for the orphanage. Scott said this still wasn’t too bad and
they were all having a good laugh and would have a great story to tell about their afternoon adventure.
This is where the fun begins. Harry (the one driving the truck) wanted to stop at the pharmacy to get a few things and also wanted to wait for the van that had fallen behind. At this point they were about half way back to the hotel and traveling on a main road. As another side note, we have been avoiding the main roads on this trip because there has been a lot of rioting going on. While stopped at said pharmacy Scott and Brent started noticing that a lot of young men were headed down the street behind them with purpose in their eyes. They joked about it – then got a little scared as they started to approach the truck. Luckily they just ran right on by and they all were relieved. Then the driver of the van that was also waiting for Harry suddenly jumped into gear and started doing a U-turn and screamed a few words at Harry and took off down the road.

Harry fired up the nasty old pickup truck pulled a fast 180 and took off after the van. Once they were out in the middle of the road Scott saw what the big hurry was all about! There were a few hundred Haitians coming down the road like a river. They started to take the first left turn to get back on track to the hotel but there was an even bigger river of Haitians coming down that road. At about that moment the traffic ground to a halt and the truck full of wet white people were right in the middle of an intersection with a rioting mob come down two to the three roads. Scott asked Brent if he was scared yet? He and everyone agreed that this was a good time to be scared. Traffic lightened up and they got out of there and only had a few pieces of fruit and empty pop bottle thrown at them before they made it back to the compound/hotel.

Torture or Fun? You Decide!

The kids are getting more brave at the pool every time we go! This time one of the things they had fun doing was to pretend that they didn't want to get thrown in the pool, yet as soon as they were thrown in they were right back out of the pool standing in line to be thrown in again. It was quite entertaining, thanks Pete for torturing the kids they had so much fun!

Avrie Up Date!

We heard yesterday that Avrie is doing a little better, she is crying and pointing to the things she wants. They also have a caregiver watching her and one other little boy that was sick. They are doing everything that they can for her and we have to trust in that.
