This was taken just after I got out of the car and Scott and Destina were waiting for me, this was taken by a Deseret News photographer that has been with the group in Haiti and ran on the first page in their paper today, so I was told!

We got to the shelter around 5pm and stayed until 10pm. It was crazy busy. Spent the time chasing kids, playing and keeping kids out of trouble. It was great! We will be heading back to Utah sometime tomorrow. We will update more tomorrow with pictures.

They are on the plane!

This is Mckenzie, my mom is out with her sisters Sheree and Julie. She just received a text from my dad saying that they are on the plane! The plan is for the plane to stop in Miami to refuel and something to do with paper work then they will head to Utah! This is not for sure yet but THEY ARE ON THE PLANE!!!! I just wanted to let everyone know! Prayers are being answered! We are almost there! It is about time I took a new picture with my little sister.

Lost the Battle...Gearing up for WAR

All,I don't even know what to say.
We have done everything we could think of to try to make this smooth and efficient and easy on our families and, especially the children. We've found out in the last few hours that it isn't enough.
Here's the latest.
1. We all have Humanitarian Parole. Now we need the Prime Minister's signature in order for our children to be authorized to leave the country.
2. While Chareyl was at the Embassy this afternoon, they announced that the Prime Minister was leaving - for Canada. What Chareyl told me was that unless you could take someone to wherever he was immediately and stand in front of him until he chose to sign your papers, there was nothing they could do.
3. Additionally, we have been trying to make this transition as painless as possible for the children. We've been working for days with all the different agencies and departments trying to make sure we have every T crossed and I dotted. I cannot even begin to tell you what we've been through in the last week and a half, trying to wade through the marsh of bureaucracy so that you wouldn't have to. We've tried to prep agencies and groups and make everyone aware of these children and this group and their plight. I have made the comment several times in the last week that I could not see how it was possible that I could be doing this as my volunteer full-time job for so many days and still have gov't departments give me new "requirements" and processes and signatures needed for each department to be happy.
Just a couple of hours ago, we were notified.... well, I won't even go into all the random stuff that we've been notified.
Here's the short list:If you Child is Category II (which nearly all of us are)When the Prime Minister or other appropriate Haitian official finally decides to sign the paperwork and our children are finally released to travel, we have no say in what happens to them for the next 2-3 days. The child will be taken to Miami and will be taken into custody of the OOR. They will take your child to a shelter in Miami. They have suggested that we do NOT arrive at the Miami Airport as you won't be able to see them there. The children will be taken via back ways to ensure that they aren't a media spectacle. When the OOR knows when our children are arriving (because the PM has finally signed the paperwork) we'll be notified of which shelter will have them. They said they will send me out a "Welcome Letter" to tell us which hotels are in the area of the shelters where the children will be. You will be able to go and visit them and play with them during the day, but at night they will be staying at the shelter and you will be returning to your hotel. They said it typically takes 2-3 days for their process to confirm all is well with the child and that you are who you say you are, etc, etc, etc.
I tried. I really did. I am still sending them the packets that they said they could preprocess and I'm hoping that they will actually do that and that it will shorten the time your children will be in a shelter. At this point, we have esclated to Senators Hatch and Crapo and Congressman Larsen as well as anyone else that would listen to my friend Brian at Utah - DHS. We're demanding that the US government find an alternative to the signature of a Prime Minister who obviously doesn't put the children first. I would suggest you stay where you are for the moment. If they fix the signature fiasco and get someone else to authorize the files, we'll be on the next plane to Miami and you'll need to know which shelter your child(ren) wil be at. If they don't fix the signature fiasco, you'll need to be able to escalate and rally your local elected officials. I think I'll start to send you some of the emails that outline what we've been through these last days. I feel like we've tried - all the way along - to do what we were asked to do and be "good citizens" and because our children weren't lucky enough to have the lousy Haitian process get them "far enough along" that our government could consider them Category I orphans. Those kids skip all this OOR shelter crap. These poor kids have been the victim over and over and over again. They just can't catch a break. And neither can their families.I'll keep you posted if I get any news. I wish this had worked out. We are still going to send the packets down, as I mentioned and I hope that will make things easier for your families when you do hit a border somewhere.L

A Day in the Life...

Here is how the children have been spending their days.

This place is a smooth running machine even with 3 times too many children.
Wake up as the sun rises. There is really no motivation to sleep in when you are on the hard stone floor! Once the children are up they run around and play for an hour or so.

Morning bath time, the children take off the clothes they have worn for the last 24 hours and dump them into a pile for the laundry crew. Then they stand in line for a bucket bath. Boys and girls all mixed together (they are perfectly ok with that). Once each child is scrubbed down they find their outfit for the day. First come first serve,if you are at the end of the bath line your wardrobe selection might be limited.




Play time - for an hour or so while the bathing crew starts cooking breakfast. When breakfast is getting close all the children take their appointed position in either the chow line (oldest) seated (middle) up stairs (toddlers) and wait to be served. I have seen oatmeal, cornmeal, and some other kind of mush. This whole process takes over an hour.

Play time again. Cool-aid and cookies/crackers at about lunchtime. Play time for a few hours. The children are very creative and stay busy with good clean fun. Jumping rope, sitting around in small groups talking about politics, and trying to pick my pocket. These little people will do great in life because they are a resourceful group. If there is food or water to be found they will figure out a way to get some. They will chew on a paperclip or a piece of plastic like gum to keep the hunger pains away. They poke and run, they do all the things children do best.

Between breakfast and preparing for dinner the ladies in the back are keeping up with the laundry.



Meal time - late in the afternoon (well before dark) the main meal is served. Each child gets an age appropriate serving and each is left to feed and clean up after themselves. This whole event also takes well over an hour.

Dusk- play time as the sunsets, cheers as the generator fires up and a very small number of florescent lights come on. They run around and play night games, watch TV, get into trouble, and get ready for bed.
Bedtime - we have all kind of staked out our territory when it comes to sleeping spots. The children from Hope are divided pretty evenly into two groups. (with a few exceptions). I took JT' Darlene, Abby, Joey, Jordan, Fabrice, Nerlange, and Vania, Destina and Avrie and have them settled on a large covered deck. They have all gotten along great and you would be proud of how well they get to bed every night.
There are a few individual cases:
Zambrie - she is so low maintenance its hard to believe. She has been crashing out early on the floor inside the main upper area with all the toddlers. I like her there because she has all the teenage girls watching her and I can check her every time I go anywhere because she is right outside the door to the main bedroom where we have all our stuff.
Yonalson - sweetest boy on earth - he likes a little more love, bless his heart. I took him with me and Avrie the first two nights and Chareyl has had him the last few nights.
Darlene - floats back and forth from the deck with the group and the master bedroom. It takes her a little longer to fall asleep and she is so quite she can sleep wherever she likes as far as I'm concerned.
Vania - is such a tiny little thing I can't stand not keeping her close. Some nights she has slept on the deck. Other nights I put her down with Avrie.
Avrie - the spoiled one. I am so glad that she has been in foster care because it has kept her alive. However she doesn't follow any of the regular rules. Her legs completely fail her when Scott, or uncle Brent are close. I won't go into details but she goes to bed like a drama queen / princess.
All the others, are in the main courtyard with Chareyl and Brent. They get to sleep a little later and I don't think Chareyl and Brent are getting as much sleep at night.

I think the routine I have laid out is pretty close to what they have been doing while over at Hope... I am happy to say that they have days with a nice routine , close friends, food and water, and a safe place to live. I want to raise my children at home so I can enjoy them every day and spoil them beyond belief but they have been in good hands while they have been here.

***Scott is supposed to be on NBC Nightly News tonight.*** They are not interviewing him just showing him kissing Avrie! Well he was a no show but they were at the orphanage he is at!

Faith and a Prayer

That is all I have left folks, we still do not have clearance to leave Haiti we have a plane to catch on Thursday night. They are reviewing the paperwork AGAIN except the paperwork is being sent to DC instead of staying at the Embassy in Haiti, this is what my congressman's aid told me this morning. There is a back log with the processing of kids coming in. The DHS, USCIS and whoever else is processing things are working around the clock to get the kids processed but they are trying to do what used to take them a month pre-earthquake in one hour. But with kids coming in by the plane load the process was backing up and kids were stuck waiting in airports. They are trying to come up with a better system for the kids. But our kids are at an over crowded orphanage, low on food and they have a plane ready and waiting to get them out.
Please pray some more that they will approve all of our kids to leave, and that all of the kids will be on that plane Thursday night! Please I need off of this roller coaster!

"Adoptive father and former Ogden resident Scott Gordon flew to Haiti with Moyes and the Crapos. When he left his home in Washington state last week, word was that nannies took some of the children into the hills after the quake.

"I brought combat boots and was ready for a commando mission," he said. The last two Haitian children he and his wife, who is from Kaysville, tried to adopt died of malnutrition and infection before they could bring them home.

Gordon sat on the porch Tuesday with 2-year-old Averie on his lap and 6-year-old Destina not far away.

"I'm just going to stay here until I bring her home. I'm not going to let her off my lap," he said. "I'm going to stick it out, live on rice and warm water as long as I have to."

Life at the Orphanage

Most of us have seen the clean, groomed, well dressed people of Haiti emerge from simple homes with no power or running water. I have always been impressed by this and it shows the pride of the Haitian people and their level of motivation.

So here is the drill after having lived it for a few days. I have mentioned a few times that we have water. I hope you didn't make the assumption that I was referring to running water! We have drinking water, and bucket water. Both are only running water if you pour them on the floor. We are staying in the Mardy's family home. It is a good sized two story building about four thousand square feet. It has a larger water storage space near the front door. A water truck comes by on occasion and fills the tank. From there it runs via bucket power. There is a 3 gallon bucket on a rope in the tank. This hauls the water up to the army of 5 gallon buckets that transport the water around the house.



Personal hygiene -
Brushing teeth - pretty straight forward, bottled water in the sink. However there is another bucket under the sink that catches the water from the bottom of the sink. It magically remains maintained by the teenage girls running about the home all day.
Bathing - or should I say bucket bath? So, you stand in a large tile bathtub/shower and scoop water from a bucket with an ice scooper and pour it over one part of your body at a time. The water is a little below room temperature and feels wonderful because it's stinking hot here! Start at the top and work your way down with the water followed by the soap followed by the rinse cycle.
The other main thing we take care of in the bathroom -
This home has a regular toilet so the first part needs no directions. However you can't just leave it there! Once you have taken care of your business you need to quickly dump enough water from the bucket to get the toilet to flush. (not too bad). Unless the person who was there last left you with a prize.
Face and hands - baby wipes and lots of them!


Clean and pressed clothes -
The buckets haul the water to the laundry area, which doubles as the bathing area for the bigger children (another post). There are about 5 women taking care of the cooking, laundry, and hygiene of the older children. The clothes are washed in large shallow stainless steel basins about three feet wide and twelve inches high. They move the clothes from one bucket to the next going through the same pattern your whirlpool would. The waste water heads down the side of the walled lot to the street. I didn't investigate beyond that. Once the clothes are clean they have an elaborate system of hanging a crazy amount of clothes out to dry. Pressed and looking new?


Hard to believe but check out this charcoal fired iron! This baby is hot hot hot! I don't know how they keep from burning right through those white Deacon shirts.




Hair - guys you may skip this section as it does not apply to you. Girls this is practically a national past time. Washing and conditioning is done in the driveway close the main street drain clean water by bucket power. Then the never ending braiding process. It's a good thing that the braids last for two weeks because it takes hours to do.

So I hope that clarifies a few of the unknowns about the daily task of personal care.

Living Large in Haiti

Living large in Haiti
This is my accommodations and menu today. I found a small supply of CocaCola across the street and I have a few cliff bars left in my bag. The first night I was here I mistakenly dropped a good portion of my supplies at the church where Avrie was staying. I was under the impression this was going to be a quick trip. I have been supporting all the kids in our little group out of what I have left. I have been trying to make sure each one gets a little love, one on one time, and something from my goody bag. The bag is getting light very fast with almost 20 little people helping out.
The UN dropped off a few bundles of these blankets. They are pressed felt/wool deals that come off on your clothes (and gets all stuck in your hair if you have really fine curly hair). There are no bedrolls or anything to find to soften the hard floor. Our group is all sleeping outdoors right on the concrete with one of these blankets or a simple sleeping bag. Not exactly ideal but we have food,water, shelter, some electricity at night which is more than 80% of the people of Port-au-Prince.
As we drove the streets the first night we were here (about 4am) the people of this wrecked city were sleeping right in the roadway wrapped in one simple blanket with nothing between their bodies and the hard ground. The weather has been perfect since the earthquake. What happens when the rains come?

I feel like I am living large with my clif bar, ice cold soda, and my UN blanket.

Things are Looking Up

***Real quick, wanted to let you know that the Haitian government is not stopping those with humanitarian parole documents. Now – there is a delay in sending children back into the United States as they are processing the category two’s in Florida, which is working out to about an hour per child, which is causing a back up. (this is also what has caused rumors that children have been turned over to foster care, not accurate – they are in foster care facilities which have beds, food, toys, 24hr care, etc. until they are processed and then turned over to their adoptive parents) ***

That was from our Senator's aid who has been helping process things on her end!


I don't have official word yet that our kids are going to be on the plane on Thursday, but after a conference call with all the powers that be things are looking good, keep praying that we can get the travel documents that we need! I will keep posting as soon as I hear anything thing official!

Just When I Thought I Could Sigh a Breath of Relief !

All,
Because we haven't been on enough of a rollercoaster....

Chareyl arrived at the Embassy today and was notified that the Haitian government has put a freeze on everything. (Anyone else smell UNICEF)

She said they told her that they cannot even give her the paperwork that has been approved until the government gives her direction.

She said that Secretary Clinton and DHS and President Preval, etc, etc are in a meeting right now trying to negotiate things.

The Embassy is turning away all people for appointments and telling them to come back tomorrow.

Chareyl says this is all very political. Haiti had lifted their exit requirements and now they've revoked that and they want to approve every child leaving.

I believe this explains why we stopped getting phone calls yesterday from DHS regarding file approvals.

I also believe there is a reason our miracle flight was arranged for THURSDAY when we wanted TUESDAY.

We need to continue to pray, folks. We need some leaders' hearts softened. We need them to be inspired to find a way for them to process their Haitian Government approval that will make them happy and that our files that are down there will meet.

We have approved I-171Hs, we have pictures of parents and passports and pictures of parents with the children. We have the proof of relationship.

Chareyl says there is NOTHING that anyone in any US government can do. This is a HAITIAN GOVERNMENT decision. It won't matter who is there. You can't fly there and make it any different than what Chareyl is getting. I know you want to DO because that's what PARENTS do.

This time all parents can do is PRAY, PRAY, PRAY. You can get mad. You can cry. Just make sure you move on to PRAY.

We need PRAYERS. WE NEED MIRACLES STILL.

I think we still move forward with faith and book flights (with insurance in case we have to make a change) and move forward trusting that God will DELIVER.

I will keep you posted if I get any more information. Chareyl is going to continue to try to get into the Embassy so that the instant Haiti has a decision we can pick up our paperwork.

BREAKING NEWS!!!!!

All,
We have a plane, we have a plane, we have a plane!!!!! Please stop and say a prayer of thanks.

A group that would prefer we don't mention their names has arranged a flight going into Haiti with humanitarian supplies. They have been given a slot to land on Thursday. They will unload their cargo. They will check off and load the kids. Then they are coming home to SALT LAKE CITY UTAH.

They have some doctors and nurses going down on the plane to return with the children to make sure everyone is getting everything they need as soon as possible. I told them, "They all look really healthy" and he said, 'Then they'll snuggle the children who are scared".

And then I cried a little bit more.

Chareyl is at the Embassy now. She will be there all day long picking up Humanitarian Paroles. We will be notified as she gets each child's paperwork.

They're coming home, ladies and gentlemen! They're coming home!!

Up Date From Scott

It was hotter today and I have been under a pile of children all day. I am getting really good kisses from Avrie and we are getting along wonderfully. She is the sweetest little thing in the world and I would go through all this crap again to get her. Destina has been a real trouper she is behaving very well and is a great big sister. She has been nice to Darlene and has been a joy to be around. I have been giving our children a lot of attention and letting them know that someone loves them. I got to tuck in little Vania and Yonalson. I made sure Zambri had an adult to watch out for her and I got all the Meuzelaar kids settled with Destina, JT, Darlene out on the deck where I have been sleeping. I feed them all some power bars and have been supplying them with water and trips the bathroom.
The children all look really good. They are all acting like all is well and they just happen to be at a different building today. None of them are freaked out or distraught. They are eating well and they all have their hair done.

Pray Extra Hard Tonight

There have been so many miracles on this journey of adoption in the last week alone there have been too many to count. There is also heartache if you have followed my blog for very long you know that we have lost 2 girls to things that are completely preventable here in the sates.
I have been asking everyone to pray for Jessica and a lot of you are, but tonight I need ALL of you to pray for Jessica specifically that her father's heart will be softened and he will release Jessica to come to her home in the US. The post below is from Brent and Lori's blog, it is the story of what is happening to Jessica. Brent is in Haiti with Scott, Lori is working 24/7 to bring all 72 children home, she is finding planes, fuel, fielding calls, sending out updates she is a one woman machine with one goal in mind to bring ALL of the kids home that have families waiting especially her Jessica.

Jessica Has a Birth Father???

(I didn't post the "whole story" before because I didn't want to freak out other adoptive parents and make them concerned that this could happen to them. These sorts of things really don't happen very often. We just seem to have special experiences in the Rosenlof household. Given that the babies are coming home this week, I thought I could explain the background now. And since someday I'll make this blog into a journal for my children, it'll be good to document the situation.)

We get so many interesting questions when people find out that Jessica was taken by her birth father last month. The first question is, "If she has parents, how is she an orphan?"

How many babies placed for adoption in the "good ol' US of A" really have NO birth parents? Work with me, people.

Just like in America, Haitian birth parents can make the judgment call that their child would be better raised in different circumstances by different people. Unfortunately in Haiti, one of the factors that often leads parents to make this decision is the fact that they can't afford to feed their children.

Jessica's birth mother has been working at the orphanage where Jessica has been living. In fact, the reason that Jessica (and her half sister who is 5) are so healthy is because their birth mother HAS been there and has been nursing them this whole time. Don't freak out. It's cheaper to nurse a child than to feed them. Just be grateful that YOU have been spared being placed in a situation where you had to make that decision.

We've met her birth mother. I've posted about it before.

What we were told is that in December, Jessica's birth father (who lives somewhere else - not in PAP) and Jessica's birth mother got into some sort of disagreement. As a way to "get back at her", Jessica's birth father came to the orphanage and took her. We've been through this before. The police won't help. There's nothing the orphanage can do. And we, who have loved and prayed and been with this girl for since she was 18 months old have no rights in Haiti.

Initially, Jessica's birth father told the orphanage that he wanted us to PAY HIM for Jessica's return. In every country I'm aware of that's called child trafficking or kidnapping and we don't play that game. If we even THOUGHT about paying him for our child... can you even imagine the havoc that would break lose in Haiti if people thought they could make money selling children??

Our contacts in Haiti assured us that they had been working through friends of Jessica's birth father, that he had calmed down, that he no longer wanted money but that he decided he wanted to spend some time with her while he had her. "He doesn't want to raise her," we've been told. "He just wants to spend a couple of weeks with her before she goes to America forever"

Then all hell broke lose and the earth moved and buildings fell and Jessica's birth father is no longer in the place where he was before the earthquake.

Abel (the house manager from our O) and I hope Brent are going out tomorrow. Abel's starting with the people that knew him and the place he knew he lived and they'll work from there. Heavenly Father knows where my little girl is. He knows how to get her hooked back up with Abel and back in her "papa mwen's" arms.

He also knew how to get us $10K for jet fuel. So who am I to complain if His timing in getting Jessica back to us doesn't line up how I think it should??

God is in charge.

"For God knoweth all things and there is not anything save He knows it." (2 Nephi 9:20)

Somewhere out there is the plane we need, is the last of the DHS approvals we need (families have been notified this evening that they're approved - they're starting to be completed!!) and my little girl that I need. I'm going to be selfish on that one. I need my daughter.

But HE knows where she is and HE will provide.

Just like he did with the jet fuel.

We need help getting our kids home!

Below is from Lori the one woman force to be reckoned with that is coordinating things from the US to Haiti. I posted earlier that we had a plane waiting for us to take the kids out and now we don't, it was a timing issue, but now we are scrambling for more miracles to take place before Tuesday. One of those miracles is money. We need money to pay for the fuel to get our kids home please read below and HELP US!


I think Heavenly Father just woke me up....LITERALLY... from sleep.

We do have a FEW very generous people that are willing to put in large amounts of money to get us jet fuel to get home.

That's Plan A. That gave us what we needed to tell the people trying to find us a plane that we can pay for it. Please find us a plane. Please get us home.

What if we could ease that burden a bit. What if we could find smaller amounts from a larger number of people. What if each of you reading this could find someone to give $10? What if some of you reading this could find someone else to give $100? What if some of you reading this knew Bill Gates, or Daddy Warbucks, or just some people who are able to bear that burden and those few people could give $1,000?

If you've already donated, will you see who else you know can assist? If you're not in a position to spare $10, will you find someone else who can?

Will you help me? Will you see if you can find us $10? $25? $100? $1,000?

This email just came in but again there is not too much information I think the next 2 days will be kind of quiet.

OK.... Remember we're working with Haiti and things sometimes run on Haitian Standard Time...

I heard from Chareyl and Nadia is bringing 'the country kids" (as they're referring to the Meuzelaars, Vania and Z) tomorrow. She didn't get them to Fontamara today. I know this will frustrate many of you, but I think it demonstrates how comfortable they are that they are being cared for in their current location.

Also, I've only had one family receive an email from DHS and it's definitely not required that you get that email. They may not send them at all. Heaven knows they have better things to do than send confirmation emails. :) So don't stress if you do not receive one.

Also, I've been working today to arrange a plane. I want you all to know that we were able to round up $10K in donations today from large contributors to pay for jet fuel. I'm still working out the logistics of the plane and when and where and such and will contact you all as soon as I have anything firm enough to book your own plane tickets against.

Please, please know that there are so many miracles in this whole process. Please don't lose faith if there are a few bumps (like missing emails from DHS or children that stay one more day with their birth families) here at the end.

A little Quiet

I don't have much to report for today. The team went out to help build tents but after they got all the way out there they were not ready for the workers so there was nothing for them to do. Scott has had trouble sending out information and pictures have been hard to get out, the system must be overloaded or something today. Wish I had more to post after the flurry of the last couple of days today has been quiet with just little bits of info going back and forth. I think it is going to be just a waiting game until all the paperwork gets cleared and they get the ok to come home.

Butterflies of Happiness!

I finally heard from Scott his battery died then he died as well tired worn out and going for almost 24 hours straight, but this morning they are both charged and ready to go. If your child was at the O last night I I did not send you a picture leave me a comment and I will contact Scott and get one to you, hopefully he will have all the other kids there sometime today and will get pictures of the rest. Here are the emails I have received from him. The first set is the communication from him and our Senator's aid that has been helping out, I put it hear so that you can all see how AMAZING CHAREYL MOYES REALLY IS!!!!!

DHS HQ last night late told me that once they process your girls - they will be in touch with you directly. I have given them your cell number and location (you're at the lds church, right?). They asking that folks not bring the children to the embassy until they're contacted.

How are you? How are supplies? Let me know as soon as you are able.

From Scott:
Our situation is good. Our coordinator spent all day at the embassy and we should have all of our parole documents ready by Monday afternoon. We are hold up at a different orphanage - we have food, water, and power at night. We have transportation for all the adults and children and have made our own flight arrangements. I have both my girls with me here and are doing fine.
Our coordinator made a great friend with the staff doing the parole paperwork and our paperwork was all in order. She (the embassy staffer) said she would work on our forms all weekend and have them for us Monday.

USCIS and Vice-Consul Percy emailed just a bit ago that your girls were in process, wonderful news!! Tell Cheryl she is fantastic, I wish all of the coordinators were as on the ball and organized.

Here is what Scott sent me:

Last night my second battery died just after my last message. They fired up the generator and I was invited to eat a little dinner with the girls. then Avrie started to melt down and I couldn't get back to the phone. She also had another runny poop bomb, by the time I cleaned up and spent some time with Destina I started to fad out. I fell asleep and slept hard for 11 hours on the stone floor. Destina found my after I had fell asleep and we cuddled and had a nice nights sleep. I didn't want to sleep with Avrie because I am out of clean clothes and can't survive another bomb. I didn't luck out with that bag of clothes - all ugly boy stuff - who would sent hoody sweat shirts to help in Haiti?
I tried a few times to wake up after Destina woke up but couldn't get my motor started. I finally got up but it still took 20 minutes for me to find my glasses and become fully awake. I was feeling guilty for over sleeping when I looked over the railing and saw Brent, Chareyl, and Trevor sleeping hard in the main courtyard.
Things went well at the embassy and we are making plans to leave Monday night.
It will be a challenge keeping the girls entertained and well dressed for the next 72 hours. I had prepared for a different mission but it is much better spending time with the girls.
All is well and we will all be home soon.

What Took Place at the Embassy

Hi, All,
I just spoke to Chareyl. She is finally finished at the Embassy for the day. She got there at 8 AM and it's now 10 PM.

The good news first - she has been able to submit all our paperwork - the entire group. They have told her that anyone with an approved I-171H should be approved for Humanitarian Parole without issue (which should be pretty much all of us....) Any one not in that category would be reviewed to confirm the files we sent down confirm that the parents have a relationship with the child, etc.

The bad news - the Department of State is not issuing visas from Haiti at this time. All of the 9 children that were in that category - even those whose visas had been printed prior to the earthquake - will be given Humanitarian Parole status. Allyson, if you want to call me, I can give you more info on that.

She said that the woman was very happy with the information in our packets for each family. The woman is working the weekend and she will contact CHareyl if there are any problems with any files.

Chareyl has a return appointment to pick up the Humanitarian Parole for everyone on Monday at noon. HOWEVER, she stressed, she will still have to wait in line at that time and, based on what she saw today, that could be 8-10 hours.

Because of this, she's asking the Scientology group that got them down there if they can fly them all home on TUESDAY. I'll get more information on that after she talks to them. We probably won't know until Monday if that's what they are going to be able to do or where it is they'll be flying. I promise you I'll pass the info on as soon as I can.

I also just talked to Team Hope. Brent said all the children - Foyer included - look "really good", particularly for what they've been through. He said the Scientologist told UNICEF where our group is at the Fontamara branch of Foyer, and UNICEF brought water containers and blankets for everyone. He said the children are all spread out blankets outside under the stars, giggling when they should be sleeping. Obviously that makes it sound idyllic, but he said, "I cannot believe the resiliency of these children's souls.

Please keep up the prayers. The woman processing these needs all the inspiration and help she can get. I'll send more on the situation at the Embassy and what they saw today later, but wanted to get this out to you.

On another note!

This is what I have envisioned for the girls room! This room has been in my head for 2 years waiting for the word that our girls were close to coming home.

wondering what size the girls will be when they get home NEXT WEEK!
Should I go with the light blue paint or the one that has more of a minty shade
What accessories to I buy for the room now
and which ones to I wait and buy when the room is painted
Do I have enough toys to entertain a 2 year old
I have forgotten what healthy a 2 year old play with
Do I have enough food in the cupboards so that I am not running to the store
and I can just be home with the girls

Hello Mama!

I just got off the phone with Scott and he said that the "Team Hope" head quarters has food and water and about 100 screaming kids. He has Avrie attached at the hip and she will not let him sit down or put her down...Scott just called and he has Destina she looks great and I got to talk to her pictures are coming!

Before Destina got there and I was talking to Scott he put the phone up to Avrie's ear and I was talking to her and she way laughing. Scott got back on the phone and said that it was the first time he actually heard her giggle!

He said all the kids look great I will get pictures to the right people as soon as they come in!

Up date from Team Hope

All,
I just got off the phone with Chareyl. She is still waiting in line at the Embassy for the handful of visa children. She's still on the waiting list for humanitarian parole appointments.

This is the classic story of "trying to fit a camel through the eye of a needle". She says there are so many PEOPLE in line. Some of those she's talked to have been sleeping on the floor in the embassy for the last 2 days. She did say that the line is moving very, very slowly.

Based on the discussions I've had with senator's offices and congressmen's offices - they are all escalating to all the right people - the problem is the eye of the needle is still only so big. It is my opinion after all the calls I've had this morning that unless they can do something to increase capacity (the number of people the Embassy can process in an hour, etc) contacting Senators and Congressmen is just making those groups sent off more emails to already overflowing email boxes.

She did say that she was told by Embassy personnel that even if she got to the front of the line today they wouldn't have the paperwork issued before Monday. They are working late (and probably over the weekend) but there are just so many people that want the exact same thing we do and not enough Embassy staff to handle all the requests.

There are many, many rumors out there. Please be cautious about what you believe or pass on to other people.

I will keep you apprised as we get more information. Please pray for the Embassy to be more efficient, the people to be more patient, the lawmakers to be more creative in addressing these issues, the children and workers to be safe and for all of our children to be safely and swiftly moved to our "command central" so we can take care of them together during this crisis.

Lunch time and avrie is distracted for a moment.
She is in a good mood and giving nice kisses she wants to be held all the time and of course I can only stand.
I am impressed at the ammount of aid here. We were at the airport for about two hours and I was able to get around a but because I escorted our trucks in. the runway use full of air force cargo jets - the new ones whatever the number is. there was an American airlines plane with a load of water. At the end of the runway an entire tent city has sprung to life. There are thousands of people here to suppoet the Haitian people.
We drove the streets at night and it is heartbreaking to see families wrapped in blankets sleeping on the streets, on sidewalks, in the back of trucks and everywhere they can find a safe place.
They have lost everything but their pride and determination. The weather is pleasant and camping on the streets is second to the need of food and water. When the rainy season comes this will not work and I fear that the suffering will increase greatly.
We traveled on main streets and for the most part they were clear. We did not take any direct routes so it is clear that many main streets are blocked and the side streets are blocked.
One in ten buildings are completely destroyed. Five in ten are damaged and there are small quakes everyday keeping people out doors even if their home looks fairly safe.
There is no fowl smell and there has been a huge clean up effort to remove the dead. Brent and I will go searching for Jessica tomorrow and I will get a better look during the daylight.

Look Who Scott Just Found!

I just got a text saying that Scott had Avrie and that there was a picture of her in my email! She looks amazing! They are on the ground, I think the 45 minutes of sleep I got tonight will be it.

***Just talked to Scott on the phone, they just lived through another earthquake he said it was kinda weird everyone running they are fine! He said Avire is healthy has meat on her bones his delema....he has nothing to entertain a 2 year old with and she doesn't like the phone our call got cut short they were at another orphanage collecting more children the other kids are going to meet them at the Embassay (I think) so I am thinking they are all at the new O but that is my guess at best!**** I did get another hour of sleep between this update and Avrie's and posting Avrie's picture! 5:05 am

***All the children look great. We were able to make it to the church that I attended and collected 11 children at about 3 in the morning. We took them to another orphanage up close to our original building. Charyel took all the children with passports to the embassy. Trevor, Brent and I are here for the day. I have avrie on my lap and just put a peanut butter and some turkey jerky in her. She looks very good. I checked her out pretty well. Her skin is clear and smooth and she looks healthy. *The plan right now is to bring all our children here today while Cheryl spends all day at the embassy running the paperwork thru. They are in Haiti!

I just got off the phone with Scott they just landed in Haiti. They are just getting off the plane and will be camping with the group they are with. Pray that tomorrow morning will go good, that Jess will be found and the kids can get home!

They are in Miami!

Scott just called me and they made it safely to Miami, they had a great flight and they were met with pizza and pop at the gate. They gave everyone in our group the cool jackets they are wearing and a sleeping bag. They have gone above and beyond to help our group and have been so nice, They will be leaving for Port in a little bit. The person who is backing this trip is Anne Archer's son. Scott met him and talked to him for a while on the flight and gave them the run down on the kids and the orphanage and Haiti in general. He said he and his wife were very cool!

We also got the details of how our measly little group of 5 got onto this flight! I tell ya miracles are falling from the sky....Apparently this flight had 5 seats slated for 5 LDS Search and Rescue people, it was on the books and on the manifest. They had to cancel at the last minute, when our contact called about getting on this flight she had no idea that was the case, the person on the other end of the phone said "umm I have to ask you a personal question is any one in your group LDS?" Our contact said "Ya all 5 of us that are going are!" The person then said then ok you have the 5 seats that were slated for 5 LDS relief workers. That is amazing!

We have also added to the number of kids that they are bringing home they are now trying to get 72 kids out, the plane will be there for us to get these kids out. The kids are being taken to a safe location that the JCICS has put together. if things go this good tomorrow ....ahh the possibilities.

Scott is supposed to call me when he lands in Haiti I will post that if I actually hear from him.

My Team of Heros!

Here is a picture of Scott, I just got off the phone with him and they are getting briefed before they head out. They are flying courtesy of 2 members of the Church of Scientology, one of the members is donating the plane and the other member is footing the bill for the crew and fuel etc. to the tune of $400,000 per flight. They are stopping in Orlando to pick up another team of volunteers before they get to Haiti, if you look closely at the jacket they gave him you will see that he is now part of their humanitarian volunteer group. They have a base camp in Port and they have food and shelter and medical care. The kids will be getting to that location ASAP! They are committed to getting our kids home, they are happy to be working with our group and helping us. They are connected to people that we need on our home team! We have appointments at the Embassy for all the kids, we have this plane on standby to bring our kids home as soon as they are processed out! Our team also just got word that the kids are ok.
Now we just need all of this to take place and we need a miracle to find Jessica, Abbie D'Joe and Jordan!

****Just got word that they found Abbie, D'Joe and Jordan - they are about an "hour" away someone is going to go get them! Now we need all prayer efforts focused on finding little Jess...btw she is the one at the end of the video posted below kissing her papa!!****

Still A Long Road Ahead!

Dear families,

I am getting ready to go and will be leaving basically in the middle of the night. I want to give you a heads up! We do not know for sure when we will get the kids out of the country. I need you to be prepared for a phone call that says something like this…get on a plane and meet us ________ It will be somewhere in the US, it won’t necessarily be Florida. I will try to give you a days notice but no guarantee. I have paperwork for all of you and hopefully they will let the children remain with me until you get there. But God willing it will work out that you can be there the minute the plane rolls in.

I am asking you all to pray like you never have before, ask your friends and your families to pray, post away! Pray that we will find ALL of the children, that they will be OK, I know they will not be perfect, but we want them safe and together! Pray that we can get all the children to the Embassy, that all of will find safe travel there, pray that we can get into the embassy and that they will process ALL of the children that they will accept ALL the paperwork that we are bringing, and most especially pray for peace that in the end we all know that this is in God’s hands. I know without a doubt that HE can move mountains and we are asking for HIM to move mountains for us.

Dwelling on Possibility

I can't even begin to put my thoughts together about what has taken place in the last 24 hours. I would have updated sooner but I really have not had 10 minutes to do that. I will start at the beginning! Yesterday the Joint Council put out a statement for all adoptive families to contact their Senators and Congress personnel. The Joint Council had secured a building near the US Embassy in Haiti, they had food, they were asking for security, water and help transporting the kids from the orphanages to the building. So Scott started calling and talked to a very helpful person, this person told him that there was another man from Bellingham at the US Embassy picking up his kids, and that the Embassy was turning away people who did not have a US contact on the ground in Haiti.
By the time Scott got off the phone with her he was formulating a plan, he was on the phone calling everyone and anyone who might have connections. Within 2-3 hours he had a flight into Haiti, we called our coordinator and she was wanting us to let the system work but within an hour or so of the first conversation she was calling him back and telling him that the State Department was not going to help and that we were on our own for bringing the kids home. She worked her contacts and she secured flights to Haiti as well.
We spent the entire night last night running around collecting the things we needed for Scott to make this trip. We were in major operation mode until almost 2 am working out the final details of the flights and packing.
We got up early and headed to the airport Scott is headed to LA to meet up with the other 3 people going to Haiti and they are flying into Haiti late Thursday night. King 5 News was there to interview Scott and they will be following his progress. I will also have the twitter feed on my computer in a little bit and we can all follow Scott on his journey to Haiti to bring our kids home.

If all goes well we will have our kids home, and about 50 other kids will be reunited with their adoptive families! I am definitely dwelling on the possibility that my girls will be home soon!

Working Hard to Bring the Kids Home!

We got word late this afternoon to gather documents and email them to the government! They are working hard at bringing our kids home. This will be no easy feat, the kids are stuck up in the hills with major road damage between them and the airport and US Embassy! There are still kids unaccounted for that we NEED to find!
But to let myself dream a little - OUR GIRLS COULD BE HOME SOON - DID YOU HEAR THAT BECAUSE I AM SHOUTING IT FROM THE ROOFTOP!

The list of stuff that needs to be done is long, I have been working all day changing the kids rooms around so that we can get their room ready, which needed some work, Oh my head is spinning, I have only slept 4 hours each night since the earthquake, I can't even think straight, but the thought of my girls coming home fills me with so much gratitude, my heart is swelling!

I will keep you posted as soon as we have official word!

It Takes a Village

We just got another update from our coordinator who has been in contact with our guy on the ground in Haiti, Harry. He sent a list of children that are not currently with Nadia the orphanage director he is looking for them today and they need your prayers. The children on that list are children that I dearly love, going to families that I have become close friends with. There will be no resting, and the prayers need to continue until all the children on the list are accounted for. Although it appears that Destina and Avrie are safe for the moment and it was great to celebrate
good news, it is time to dig in and pray earnestly
for the other children needing to be found.
We also need prayers that once all the children are found that we will be able to bring them home.

I just received word from Harry early this morning on the children. Again the messages are incomplete and very short. But apparently all the children are not together. Harry has not been able to reach Abel so we don’t know if some of the children are with him, but he gave me a list of the children that are not with Nadia. Again, I am assuming the rest of the children ARE with her. He is going to try and reach Nadia today and get all the children with her and take them to the church where he can care for them. He will also try and locate the rest of the children. I know this will be hard to read if your child is on the list below,but please know that we don’t have all the information Yet. However hard I want to give the information as I receive it.

I just got word that Avrie was found and she and the little boy are safe and headed to the LDS church where there are supplies and people taking care of them. Prayers have been answered, thank you for praying. Please continue to pray there is still a little girl Jessica missing that desperately needs to be located and brought back to safety. We still don't have proof positive that Destina and the other kids are ok please pray that they will get the supplies that they need and that we will hear good news on their situation.

Dear Hope families,

I just heard from Harry and although the bulk of the email is still somewhat vague, I do have good news that Avrie and Wyclef are ok. Harry finally talked to Nadia today and this is his quote “I am so happy to hear from Nadia and to know that most of the kids been safe” he says that he is going to go and get them and bring them to the church so he can take care of them. He said that he has Fabrice and Schnider with him, I don’t know if he has had them with him or if he just got them. But either way we know for sure that they are ok and with Harry. I sent Harry a list of all the kids, I asked him to please go get them all if possible, and then to give me a check mark by every child and tell me how they are.

I will let you know, I am hoping that he will have them or at least see them all tomorrow.

Helping Our Orphanage

Dear Hope families,

I wanted to share some good news with you today, I believe we need it right now to boost our spirits. First let me say that things are going well with negotiations with US and Haitian Governments to bring your children home. Everyone involved wants the outcome to be good and is looking out for the best interest of the children. It is imperative that you register your Adoption with Joint council, once you have done this you should receive a confirmation email, If you did not get a confirmation email, go back and do it again. As you know we have confirmation that Harry is in an LDS church in PetionVille, all the children living in the orphanage with him were evacuated safely. The mounting concerns now are that PetionVille is in the mountains and it has been difficult to get aid to them. Harry said that there is food to purchase and even gas for his truck, but he has no money. And because PetionVille is in the mountains it has been difficult for rescue teams to get to them. Harry says that if he could get some gas in his car he could try to find Nadia and the foster kids. He would also be able to buy food and supplies, there is some available to purchase (although the prices are astronomical) but the banks are shut down and there is no way to get money.

I am happy to tell you that we have found a way to get money to Harry! We have a friend (viaShannon Cox, haitianroots.com) who will be traveling to Haiti tomorrow with a special medical Team put together by the LDS church. Dr. Jeremy Booth has agreed to take the money to Harry. He is an ER doctor, speaks fluent Creole and loves the Haitian people. They have been trying to fly out for several days but because of flight restrictions but hope to fly out tomorrow. The hope for the little angels team is out getting a substantial amount of cash right now to send with Dr. Booth. I know this money will be critical in helping to find and feed our children.

I want to tell each of you thank you, it is because of so many of you and your contributions that the hope organization has funds to send down.

I will keep you posted, please pray that Dr. Booth is able to reach Harry with the funds!!

Anothe Prayer Request!

I have never prayed so much for so long in my life but again I am asking you to pray....this time please pray that Avrie will be found. She has been in a foster care home, which has saved her life. In June when we went to visit she was so sick we did not think she would make it. She continued her downward spiral after we left. Then in August she was placed in a foster care home and was getting the medical attention that she so desperately needed she started to thrive. By Oct, the next time I saw her, she had gained 5 lbs and was a new kid, happy, healthy and doing well in her new environment.
Well they are going to go searching for her and another little boy that was in the foster home on Saturday. Please pray extra hard and long that they will be able to find Avrie and the other little boy. That the foster mom will be ok and that she along with Avrie will be found in good condition. As always I will post when I hear something. Thank you again for the sweet comments and love that has been shown to our family.

Latest Information

Hey my sweet Hope families,

Just want to send you a little up-date, I got a message from one of the French families adopting from Hope, so this is second hand news, but it is hopeful so I am sharing it with you.

She says that her attorney/adoption coordinator was able to reach Nadia by phone and she says she has the children with her and they are ok for now. We don’t know where they are but I am under the impression they are not at any of the orphanages. I am grateful to hear that Nadia is ok and she is with the children, she did say that they were desperate for water. I have notified the Red Cross and the LDS church of their needs and about where I think they might be and I am hoping that food and water will be taken to them shortly.

I am also working with JCICS and the Department of State to bring our children home! Please do not listen to rumors,

As I have been watching TV all day and the same stories keep replaying I want to scream! They are talking about all of the supplies sitting at the airport and they can't figure out how to get it to the people without the people mobbing is very maddening to me. Figure it out! Get the food, water, and meds to the people. Please don't let healthy people die from lack of water.
Please pray for the answers to come to those in charge so they can get the help where it is needed. Please pray for the people to stay calm, continue to help their neighbors, and that their spirits will stay strong. Please pray that we will hear word on the children at our orphanage the lack of information is hard but I am also afraid I don't want to hear bad news either. Please pray that through some miracle our children will be safe and that they will get to come home soon!

Dear Hope Waiting Families,

I just received first hand news from Haiti just a few minutes ago from Harry Mardy. Both Harry and his brother Guesno are okay. Harry has not

Been able to reach Nadia the orphanage director. He did get in touch with one of the Nannies at the new orphanage and

All the kids there are okay. As you know Hope for the little Angels was in the process of moving to another city and another

Orphanage. We know that some of the children were still at the old orphanage, I do not have word on these children

And I do not have names of these children. Also we had a couple of kids in foster care and I have no word on those kids.

Harry did say that his mother did not make it and his sister Kenia did not make it. I think that some of you have met Kenia

She has come to the Hotel during the parent trips with Harry’s wife Pascal. I am so grateful for the news we received today and

I will continue pass on information to you as I get it.

I am not sure which Orphanage Destina was at.....Avrie is in foster care and have had no word on her please continue to pray!

Still no news but have been watching Anderson Cooper 360 tonight and he is broadcasting from our hotel balcony, that is good news the hotel is still standing and from what I can tell and have heard it has not had major damage. We are hopeful that our friends that work at the hotel are safe and that they were working when the earthquake hit.
I am still in shock worried sick about the kids and going crazy not hearing anything about how they are doing or damage assessment to the Orphanage. We have made so many friends in Haiti and we are praying that they are ok. I will post when I hear anything. Thanks again for the emails, comments, and phone calls I am not really up to talking to anyone about this yet, I have no news and I get too upset if I have to talk about it over and over. I am glued to the TV and the computer waiting for any news!
