Ryan update...

Ryan has made it through the dessert, he was super lucky to have mild weather throughout most of his 700 miles of hiking in the dessert. He arrived at the base of the Sierra Mountains last week, and then this week the Mojave dessert had record temperatures of 120. He is hiking in snow, it has been one of the wettest winters in a long time and he will be without cell service for a few weeks. He is having a great time and I love following along on his adventure, I am so glad he is following his dream!

I officially closed on my old house, it was like this constant reminder of what used to be, what could have been, and packed full of lots of fun family memories, but it was a great relief to finally have it done, closing that chapter completely.
I have come to love the house I am living in right now, I know it will probably just be temporary but it is so perfect for me and the girls right now.
Tia and I are getting ready to go to Haiti, it will be her first time back. I drove Marco to the airport today he is so excited to see his boys and then we will join him at the end of the month. My life is far from perfect, but I am really feeling settled, at peace and loving life. It has been one very long journey, hours of counseling, many tears, and lots of stress, but I feel that I have emerged out of the mud pit I was stuck in and I am now basking in the sunlight. I have spent a lot of time in self reflection and working on myself. I am comfortable with me. Marco and I are having a great time...I love this man!

Moving

I have spent the last month moving from my home of 13 years to a new place about 20 miles north. It was a lot of work. I needed to do some major downsizing, and organizing, before I started packing and boxing things up. I worked almost everyday after work until I fell into bed each night. On moving day I had my awesome kids and Marco come help. Then I spend every night after work cleaning the old house and unpacking and organizing the new house.

I love my now house, the feeling that I am completely in control of my life, my finances, and I am making it on my own is a huge sense of accomplishment. It is also very scary. I can't rely on consistent child support, Scott doesn't find it important to support his children. I have to budget every penny so when I need to take my car in for new brakes, I have enough in savings to cover that. I am still paying for utilities on two houses and taking care of two lawns. It is still a lot of work. But each day I am getting closer to closing the door on my old life and letting that go, taking the good with the bad. I am looking forward to a different future then I ever imagined but I am determined to make that wonderful.

In other news...

Ryan has almost completed his second week hiking the PCT. This has been a dream of his for several years. He as researched and worked to making this dream a reality. When I last talked to him he was still having the best time ever. He is meeting people from all over the world, blazing his own trail, and figuring out the details. He has to manage the money he saved to last for the next 4.5 months. He took with him 15lbs of gear to last for the next 4.5 months. I am so proud of him for setting this goal and working hard to achieve it, and I hang onto every post he makes. You can follow him on FB or Instagram @ ry_gnar542

Life is an adventure ...embrace the change

I have often said to other people going through life changing experiences that life is an adventure and to embrace the change and now it is time to take my own advice and that is exactly what I am trying to do. Life is ever changing for me right now. My house is up for sale, ironically I have lived in this house longer than I have lived in any house for my entire life. Change is hard, but it is also good to have a clean break and move on. I felt I have been in the process of rebuilding my life for the last several years and this is just the next step.
I am also having to part with some treasured items that are tugging at me emotionally. I have my mother's baby grand piano up for sale and as much as I know I need to sell it, because I really don't have room, I will probably be moving again at some point, and it is not easy to move, it is still hard to let it go, it has been a daily reminder of my mom.
A year ago when I was trying to figure out how I was going to pay for expensive divorce lawyers to fight off the crazy stuff Scott was sending my way, I had a night where I didn't sleep much, I have had several of those nights, but that night in particular I was stressing about money. In the early morning hours I heard my mom's voice as clear as day telling me to "sell my piano". I woke up crying, I never thought I would ever have to part with her piano. I managed to come up with the money needed to pay the lawyer. Then I found myself in a position of needing to sell the house.  Finding a house that I can afford that has room for a piano just really doesn't exist. I have had a year to emotionally disconnect from the piano and I am ready to let it go....or so I thought. I had a piano teacher come over to check it out for one of her students that was interested in the piano, and as she was playing tears just started streaming down my face, it was the first time since my mom had passed away that someone was playing the piano like she used to play. I was embarrassed because I had a hard time keeping my emotions in check while telling the piano teacher why it was so emotionally hard for me to see it go. But it is time for the piano to be loved by someone else and I will always have the memories of my mom playing the piano and teaching my children to play the piano as well.
I have had to learn to let go of a lot of things the last couple of years, some of been easier than others, but I know my mom would be at peace with my decision and supporting me.
Life is an adventure, changes are coming, and I am taking control and making the most of my life!

I sold my piano the other night to someone who reminds me a lot of my mom, she is a piano teacher and will take great care of the piano...she even said I could come by and visit.

Living Life and Random Thoughts

I have to admit that the last several years have been really hard but I have really found out how strong I am, what I am willing to live with and what I am not. I have spent the last two years doing a lot of self reflecting and figuring out what direction I want my life to go. Moving to an island and living a carefree life would be top of that list but I have to be realistic.

I know a few things about myself that I have really been focusing on and that is caring for others, I do it everyday in my job, I have around 70 kids that I put a lot of thought into and hope I am advocating for them the best way I know how. I have my own kids that are always on my mind, and how I can be the best mom to them. I also have a passion for Haiti. It started long ago on that first trip to Haiti in January 2008. Something changed in me and I could not get my mind or my heart out of Haiti.

I have spent my life being afraid of what others will think, or just living in fear of the unknown, or afraid to take chances and risks. During the last two years I had to get over what other people think really quickly, I have no control over that...think what you would like. I lived in fear, I hated making even the simplest phone call, but now I just face that head on and pick up the phone. I have had to do a lot of things that I never thought I would and I found this quote that really fits...

"And then I realized that to be more alive I had to be less afraid so I did it, I lost my fear and gained my whole life."

I call these great quotes my "tattoos" I don't think I will ever get a tattoo but I like thinking that I could have several sayings engraved in my soul to remember all the hard things I have done.

Back to Haiti...with my love of Haiti and helping children I have also found love. It is a great feeling to be so connected to someone that shares the same passion and desire to help.

I am not sure I am ready to share the whole story but we met when I went to Haiti in October 2016, I am sure I have written about him on this blog when I wrote about that trip...we became friends, and after I knew I was getting a divorce we talked about the possibility of having a future together.  That friendship blossomed and we are planning a future. I am really excited to see how it unfolds and where the adventures take us.

I have been working on helping the school he started in his town of Carrefour in Haiti. He started a school with 6 kids that were too poor to go to school. He saw them running around causing trouble and decided that they needed to be in school. He used his own funds to start this school about 6 years ago, and when I came on board to help there were 90 kids at the school. Today there are about 200 kids going to school and they are working on clearing some land, that his family owns, to build a bigger better school. We have built a chicken coop and they raise and sell chickens, we have children sponsored and we have raised money and have had school supplies donated to help the school. On my first trip they were using cardboard nailed to the wall as chalkboards, our first fundraiser helped to buy "real" chalkboards.

We have just formed a 501c non-profit, we have board members that have great community connections and we are ready to see where the possibilities take us. This has been a saving grace for me during the last two years, I have had the ability to focus on other things besides what is going on in my personal life. Along with finishing school, getting a great job, and continuing my connection in Haiti, I have also found love again!

Life is good!

Tia said to me the other day, "Mom I don't know if it is your make-up or what but you look younger." I told her it is because I am happy....love that girl!

Never Thought

Never thought…

I never thought I would be getting a divorce…

I never thought I would be fighting for support for basic needs for our girls…

I never thought he would try and sabotage my job and career…

I never thought he would be the dead beat dad that doesn’t spend time with his kids…

I never thought he would then refuse to pay for out of pocket medical expenses not covered by my insurance because I didn’t let him know I was taking our child for her well-check appointment…

I never thought he would not pay for part of their school lunches even after he promised the girls that it was ok to eat school lunch because he would pay for it…

I never thought he would refuse to help pay for sporting activities because I signed them up without asking him first…

I never thought he would sign a legal agreement then try and get out of that legal agreement…

I never thought I would have to get a court order to have him pay child support…

I never thought I would have to get a court order to have him move out 9 months after I filed for divorce…

I never thought I would have to get a restraining order to stop him from asking harassing and non-relevant questions about my personal life that have no bearing on our divorce….

I never thought I would have to get a court order to give us his financial information and then he continues to not comply…

I never thought I would have to get a court order to have him attend a mandatory deposition…

I never thought I would have to get a restraining order for my safety because he made threats to my 11 year old about hurting me…

I never thought I would have to defend myself to my children for just trying to get out of a very broken marriage with enough support to provide for the two children that I am raising as a single mom…

I never thought I would be a single mom…

I never thought I would be dating again….

I never thought I would be happy again…

I never thought I could be in a relationship where there was mutual respect…

I never thought I could make it on my own…

I never thought I would graduate college…

I never thought I would find a job and career that I love…

This list is never ending, and life has certainly thrown some curve balls my way, but I am finding out how strong I am and what is really important to me.

“Every night her thoughts weighted heavily on her soul but every morning she would get up to fight another day, every night she survived.” R.h.sin.

Every day for the last 2 years has felt like survival…but I continue to surprise myself and conquer each new battle head on.

Dear Future Me

I came across this poem I had to write for one of my classes almost 2 years ago, I was just at the beginning stages of the divorce, I had no idea what was in store, but this is still pretty right on track.

Dear Future Me,

It has been a long time since you have been able to focus on what you want your future to look like.

Now is your chance, life has opened up new doors, new adventures, and try that new hike.

You have lived a life for others, focused on their happiness and that made you happy as well;

But your life is a blank canvas, the colors on the palate waiting and ready to swell.

The children are growing, finding their way, like the birds in the nest when it is time to fly away.

The courage it took to go back to school, to be dedicated and focused, to set your aim high;

Was something that had been haunting your conscience for so long you could no longer deny.

Although, you thought you were old, life is to be lived and the story is still being told.

It is time to close the chapter on the past life that left you in despair;

Each new adventure is an existence of life, creating memories to share.

Trips to the beach, collecting shells in the sand, laughing with friends, feeling alive;

You deserve to feel happiness and joy, life is about sharing and giving and learning to strive.

Reaching the goals, living the dream, the world is yours don’t forget;

Take advantage of the time, don’t waste a second life is too short to have a regret!

Taking one for the Team

I feel that I have paid a pretty big price for trying hard not to drag our children into the middle of this ugly divorce. But time and time again I have under estimated what depths Scott will go to. He has called foul on the entire justice system because he is not “getting a fair shake.”

We went to court yesterday (Friday March 1st), for what was supposed to be and entry of orders and hearing for the restraining order, yes he verbally threatened to “beat me until I was in the hospital.” And called me a terrible lying bitch…to my 11 year old.  He decided to submit 167 pages of evidence against me and the whole court system to show how he had been wronged and how our legally binding settlement agreement should be thrown out and we start all over. My lawyer did not want to waste time or money answering his 167 pages because they were not relevant to the motion at hand, and Scott did not file a motion but just alluded to it in his complaints. The commissioner did a really good job of pandering to Scott, after all this hearing had been the courthouse gossip for a couple of weeks with all of his harassing of the courthouse staff, my boss included, and his bribery, he actually brought bonze trees and thank you notes to two of the clerks at the courthouse because they were so helpful to him… they were doing their job. I think the commissioner was trying to appease Scott so that Scott would feel that all of his concerns and complaints were heard.

The commissioner had nothing from me, he was only reading and hearing one side, and it was a long side. Scott included his 33 pages of marital complaints that go back to when we first were married. He had letters and pages of misleading and slandering statements about my friend from Haiti who I am now dating. He even had statements from my children saying that they had met him and that he had dinner at my home, because that is relevant in his mind. Along with all of that, he had glowing statements from our children that he convinced to have them write back at the beginning of the year, because he told them I was trying to take the girls away from him by calling him a pedophile. So all of that information came out and the commissioner basically told me I am not a good parent, because the kids wrote something for their father but not me. Scott wanted a one sided trial where he could present all of his evidence and I had to remain silent.

The commissioner then made a ruling that part of the legally binding divorce settlement would have to be renegotiated, he was confused about the child support number. My lawyer pointed out that Scott came up with that number on several different occasions, and that I agreed to that number but gave up several other concessions just to make the deal workout, and we would need to go to binding arbitration to figure it out. WE ALREADY DID FIGURE IT OUT AND SCOTT WANTED TO CHANGE HIS MIND!!

When it came time to talk about the restraining order, he told Scott that we really need to figure things out and he understood that emotions run high, then he admonished BOTH of us to not talk bad about the other parent. Where in that restraining order did it say I was talking bad about him? I have never called him names or threatened his physical safety to my minor children.

There is a new hearing set for revision of the judgment by a judge that is coming from another county, hopefully he will uphold the original legally binding agreement and we can be done.

Honoring Marital Vows with Complete Fidelity

Well this was a fun chapter to read…Being in the middle of a divorce after 30 years of marriage and finding out that your spouse has cheated on you throughout those 30 years, and getting caught was pretty damaging to my self-esteem.  I knew our marriage was in trouble, but I always thought, naively so, that he would never do that. I spent a lot of time blaming myself, blaming him and wondering why I didn’t see the signs, that looking back seems so glaringly obvious today.
When I found out about the cheating, I didn’t confront him about it, I tried to be exactly what he was seeking, and I tried to repair our marriage. When it happened again during this period I knew it was more about his addiction then what I was or was not providing in our marriage. I knew that I could never trust him, and he was very quick to put the blame all on me for the reason he was addicted to pornography and sex. I have done a lot of studying and praying to get over the feelings of hurt and betrayal, I have recognized my part in damaging our marriage and I am working on healing and moving on, creating a new life for myself.
This chapter really had some great points in identifying the different types of infidelity and how they affect the marriage.  A couple of the quotes that stuck out to me were:
“Infidelity is a subtle process. It does not begin with adultery; it begins with thoughts and attitudes. Each step to adultery is short, and each is easily taken; but once the process starts, it is difficult to stop.”
“Satan will try to convince us that we can find happiness in infidelity. Even though it may seem for a time that everything is wonderful, President Benson warned, “Quickly the relationship will sour.  Guilt and shame set in. We become fearful that our sins will be discovered. We must sneak and hide, lie and cheat. Love begins to die. Bitterness, jealousy, anger, and even hate begin to grow.”
Pornography was a big part in our marital problems and it went unaddressed because of shame and guilt, on both of our parts. He didn’t want to admit that it was a problem and seek help, and I was ashamed and embarrassed that my husband was addicted to pornography and didn’t want to talk about it to get help, thinking that he was dealing with it and keeping it under control. It soon consumed him and then he needed more.
“Use of pornography results in distinctive negative impacts, including the objectification of people, overemphasis in the visual, overemphasis on sex, and the expectation of instant gratification.”
I think I can look back and see that I was more of an object to my husband that served a purpose, I didn’t feel that intimacy and trust needed for a strong healthy marriage, and I pulled away, withholding affection and becoming critical.
“We control objects, and when they do not satisfy us, we get rid of them. When we objectify people, we falsely believe that they are there only to please and gratify us, not to challenge or disagree with us. We stop seeing their humanness and uniqueness. In turn, we begin to lose the ability to notice and respect the needs and feelings of real people in our lives.”
Do I take ownership in some of the marital troubles yes, I was not perfect. Looking back I think we could have been helped with counseling, but unless those addictions were managed we would have been on the same road.
“A common myth is that affairs occur only because of a bad marriage. This belief is simply untrue. Spouses are sometimes inconsiderate, unkind, and difficult, and they must share the blame for broken homes, but this is never justifies the other spouse’s covetousness and unfaithfulness and infidelity.  There are many people in troubled marriages who do not commit adultery just as there is plenty of infidelity that occurs even when spouses are generally satisfied with their marriages. A troubled marriage neither causes nor justifies infidelity.”
“Infidelity has less to do with the sate of a marriage and more to do with the individual. It is often a result of a personal transformation that has taken place within an individual’s nature. “
What can be done to help avoid infidelity in a marriage? Some of my own personal advice from my experience is to make sure to ask the tough questions before marriage. Get to know the person you are marrying don’t be afraid to have those difficult conversations they will come up one way or another at some point in time, it is better to know ahead of time. If you are having trouble establishing the intimacy and trust that is required in a marriage, find out why. Seek counseling, talk about it with your spouse; the problem will just get bigger as time goes on. The book has the following simple suggestion:
“Be fiercely loyal to one another. As we construct appropriate boundaries, are fiercely loyal, control thoughts, and put our spouse first, it is unlikely our marriage will ever be traumatized by infidelity.”

Repentance and Forgiveness

Repentance and Forgiveness

“Genuine forgiveness is a process, not a product. It is hard work and it takes time. It is a voluntary act that gives meaning to the wound and frees the injured person from the ills of bitterness and resentment.” (Successful Marriages and Families pg. 205)

This post is for me, I have put a lot of thought into trying to forgive. Just when I think I am almost there something else happens and I realize that it is not time to forgive yet. I often go back and remember how forgiving my mom was, she forgave my dad for all the things that he did to ruin their marriage, she always showed forgiveness. I did not think that I would be in the same position 25 years later. I also realize that I need forgiveness as well, I am not completely innocent in the demise of my marriage but I didn’t do irreparable damage, and then continue to try and ruin his life. There was a passage in the chapter that talked about a wife praying for her ex-husband, and I really don’t know if I am at that point but I feel the need for divine help in getting past the hurt and being able to move on.

I also found this passage from the book “Successful Marriages and Families” to be very helpful in reading and learning about forgiveness:

“It is natural to be angry and even vindictive when one has been wronged.  Sometimes victims are uncomfortable with these emotions and try to skip straight to reconciliation, without adequately acknowledging the wrong or allowing time for meaningful repentance and forgiveness to take place. But Forgiveness demands recognition of wrongful behavior.”

I have been angry, frustrated, and continue to be confused by his actions and denial. He is playing the victim and trying to turn everything around and put the blame on me…it is all my fault that he cheated on me. I can see that he is angry as well. Not angry at himself for his actions that brought us to this place but angry that he got caught, and that I would not accept that behavior. He was under the assumption that he would be able to stay married to me and have women on the side to fulfill his fantasies and desires. He is now trying to make my life even more difficult because I chose to not accept that behavior.

I feel the need to forgive because I do not want my life to be full of bitterness and hate. I want to take the remaining time I have and make the best of it. I have completely changed my life, I went from a stay at home mom, to working part-time to deciding to go back to school. Then while going to school full-time I got offered a full-time job that I could not turn down, at the same time that my marriage was falling apart. The last two years have been extremely difficult, long and hard. Full of hurt and disappointment, but I have changed; I have become a different person that I am really proud of. I have done hard things and come out ahead.  I have made it through unbearable days and I am almost finished with this trial. I have graduated, I have a new job, the one I went back to school to get, a job a love, I have a great support system, I have great kids. I have a bright future, not the one I envisioned living but one that I am in control of at this time. I have no room in my life for bitterness and hate, I want to live fully and enjoy each moment. That is the lesson I take away from this chapter, from my mom who was the epitome of forgiveness and that is the lesson I want to leave my children as well. I will not tolerate the disrespect that was shown to me, but I will not wallow in self-pity, hurt and anger, I will live the good life!
And finally a quote, not from the book, but expressing how I feel, "Forgiving you means I no longer dwell on what an asshole you are...It doesn't mean you are not an asshole."
I really have felt that shift, as today I was served even more court documents, yes agreements were signed and we should be divorced, but he is now contesting that. He is contesting it to the tune of 167 more pages of how everyone in the legal system is corrupt and biased, how I am a huge liar, and he even felt the need to guilt my children into writing declarations about what a wonderful dad he is because he has told them I am trying to stop him from seeing the girls. When I read all of this I didn't panic, I was appalled at what he has had our kids do, hurt that they actually did that, but then I realize he is just pulling out everything he can to ruin me and it is not working. I see through it and hopefully someday the kids will see through it as well.
I am living the good life despite what he is trying to do.

Weapon No More

"I am not responsible for your shitty life. Please wake up from your delusion/the story you tell yourself, look at the choices you've made and be accountable for them. Stop blaming me or anyone else because you're not happy with your life. You created it not me."
Divorce is messy, but it gets really messy when the other person is spreading lies, twisting the truth, and using intimate details of painful experiences to hurt the other person. Nobody wants to hear from a 3rd party that your ex-husband is justifying his actions by telling others something that happened in your past, that only a handful of very trusted people, even knew existed.
I was a difficult child; my mom wasn’t sure how to handle me. My parents raised my older two siblings with strict rules and this resulted in my oldest sister rebelling. When my teenage years came along I think my mom was tired of trying to parent a difficult, or misunderstood, teenager and instead of being strict she took the opposite view and was very lenient, I had no rules. As a matter of fact, I kept pushing the boundaries to see if any rules even existed for me. This led me to start dating at a young age and I started dating a guy that was much older than I was, and I was in a date rape situation at a fairly young age. I belong to a religion that has a strict moral code and this was a major sin, not a crime as it would be seen today.  I was embarrassed, ashamed and had a tremendous amount of guilt and self-loathing. I had no one I could trust to tell, I blamed myself, I kept it bottled up inside and it was my dirty little secret.
I was hurt, I was lonely. My heart in tatters with no one worthy enough to share that awful experience with. Years passed and just like anyone with this kind of trauma, I became more and more closed up. I was scared, sad, and unable to trust enough to give my entire self to anyone. Then I met my husband. The first man I had ever fully trusted. He had a lot of issues, the kind of issues that I still don’t like talking about.  Some of my closest friends and family keep telling me, “He is hurting you, telling lies about you, twisting the truth, spreading this little dirty secret that has made you suffer so much. All he wants is to make everyone see you as the bad person, the one at fault. If I were you, I would start spreading his secrets.”
I must admit that it’s the kind of thought that constantly comes to my mind, but I never wanted to talk about my personal life with others, I believe in a loving God that loves me, and would heal my wounds. I dedicated my life to raising 7 kids that I dearly love, to serving my family and church. I went back to school to get my degree; I had finally had enough of the blaming and criticizing for not being a porn star. I was done hiding and pretending that all his fraud and cheating was ok. I don’t see him as a personal threat, because I understand that he is just very angry and spreading hate. I believe he now regrets what he has done to me, because he finally realized how hard it is to find a wife, a mother, a confident like me who supported him, and all of his crazy ideas.
In reality I did have some issues with intimacy, but in a healthy marriage there is trust, kindness, love and understanding, emotional connection and growing together, and that didn’t really happen in our marriage. I was never good enough, never thin enough, just never enough… for him. Now he has made it his mission to humiliate and to criticize me so he can justify his cheating.  It was always about his satisfaction like I was a robot with no feelings or emotions, he wasn’t worried about my health, I had no idea of how many sexual transmitted diseases he could have caught and passed onto me throughout the years, I guess I was lucky in that respect.
This dirty little secret that he has used as a weapon against me has no power now. Matter of fact it is a huge reason I work in the child welfare system today. I have not let that dirty little secret ruin my life. I have used it as a catalyst to be more compassionate, loving, and understanding. It was my lack of trust that led to the erosion of our intimacy, it was his need to have sex on demand that eroded our intimacy, it was being objectified, and that eroded our intimacy.
So the dirty little secret is out, it can no longer be used as a weapon against me, just like the bomb squad coming in and clipping the wires I am free, no more guilt and shame, no more being embarrassed, no more power to hurt me. #MeToo

Should I Stay or Should I go?

"You own everything that happened to you. Tell your stories. If people wanted you to write warmly about them, they should have behaved better."
Nothing like taking marriage and family classes while in the middle of a divorce, and having to really reflect on the situation that brought you to the awful place you find yourself in. This was written several months ago for a class assignment.
Should I stay or should I go? This is a question that played over and over in my mind the first 7 months after discovering that my husband had cheated on me. Divorce was the last thing that I wanted. Initially when I found out I tried to do what he needed to make our marriage work. I told him what I needed and we actually had some great conversations during the few months after I discovered what he had done. When the cheating didn’t stop, and there was little to no effort on his part to make the changes that I needed to see I knew it was time to consider a divorce. He actually sat me down in one of those great conversations and told me I was not a priority in his life, he didn't like spending time with me, I couldn't go mountain biking or downhill skiing with him and he really didn't like any of the activities that I enjoyed like hiking and relaxing bike rides. He couldn't even stand to watch a TV show or movie with me. Things quickly took a turn for the worse at that point. Sadly, my husband thought that I was too weak, needy, and unable to care for myself to ever file for divorce, and he changed into a man I never thought I would see. He became bitter and angry and started doing things to make my life miserable. In a lengthy letter to my adult children he tried to describe to them that I was going crazy and he told the children he had "no intentions of divorcing me, but he would continue to have women on the side."

Even after all of this, it wasn’t until several months later, after I filed for divorce, he had come home one night and announced that we should not get a divorce that we needed to work things out. My confirmation came the next day; I was physically sick most of the day. I had called my little sister and asked her opinion, about staying married, after all I had been married for 30 years, I had a “temple marriage” and I was putting all that in jeopardy. It was then that she had told me that my husband had physically hit on her when she was sixteen and we had just had our first child and we were home visiting. She said do not stay, he will not change. I didn’t need her permission but maybe some validation, other than my physical sickness, to know I was doing the right thing. The next day I told my husband that I was going to continue on with the divorce and I felt better immediately after.

In the chapter in “Successful Marriages and Families” they really talk about the damage divorce does to children, that it should not be taken lightly and should be worked out if at all possible and gave three reasons for getting a divorce.

“In my opinion, ‘just cause’ should be nothing less serious that a prolonged and apparently irredeemable relationship which is destructive of a person’s dignity as a human being.”

We have clearly had prolonged difficulties that have gone unaddressed for years. We both swept the problems under the rug or thought that we had solved them, until the next big issue came up and then all the old stuff would come out.  There appeared to be “little hope for repairing the marital relationship.” My husband had it in his mind that he wanted to pursue the bachelor lifestyle, to focus on his activities and didn’t really care about my needs or making our family a priority anymore. I can’t even explain what his actions have done to my dignity, staying with him would have wiped it completely out. That is not something I want my children to see, I want them to see a strong woman that has boundaries and crossing those boundaries is not acceptable.

“Some divorces are necessary and just, and may actually serve to clarify the moral boundaries of marriage by identifying behavior that seriously violates marriage covenants.”

I do not like what this has done to my children. The fact that this is dragging out, is draining  all of my financial resources, and ripping our family apart, is not lost on me. My youngest child at home is struggling with anger and abandonment issues and trying to figure out if she even matters to her parents. My adult children are struggling to have a relationship with the fun-loving dad that they grew up with but trying to figure out why he is trying to destroy their mother, and how they can have some kind of a relationship with him. There will need to be a lot of repair work done to heal our family. Divorce is never good, but sometimes it is necessary.

And the Betrayal Continues

Still not officially divorced yet...Scott is now contesting the legally binding agreement he signed agreeing to the divorce. But he has really stooped to a new level. He is accusing the Judges and Commissioner of being biased, because I work in the same building. He is calling their ethics into question. But that is not what really what this betrayal is all about. It goes back to the beginning when he manipulated and tried to get our children to take his side. He is the classic definition of parental alienation, and he is at it again.

He has been spreading the rumor that I am accusing him of being a pedophile, he does this to gain sympathy, to make me look bad. He has even gone so far as to tell our adult children that I was going to use this, when our divorce was going to trial, to try and get full custody of the the girls. He had them believing him again, and they wrote declarations for him on his behalf to be used against me in court.

In reality, I have never used that word in one court document, email or text message describing Scott, this is all made up in his head to make me look bad. Now he has roped his children into his narrative and they continue to believe his sad story even though they are fully aware of his previous lies about me. I would have thought that maybe they would have asked for evidence from their father that I was actually saying this before they jump to promote his lies. Maybe they should have come to me and let me know that this is what their father was doing and saying.

He twisted words that Destina said to him, when he asked her "If mom were to have some strange man that you didn't know move in would you feel safe?" She replied that ya that would make me uncomfortable and I might go stay with McKenzie for a few days. Scott twists that around to say,

"Destina directly reported to me that she expects "that guy mom is always on the phone with" could be moving in with them and that such an evet would cause her significant discomfort and fear for her safety. Destina has already made explicit arrangements to move out upon his arrival and live with our eldest adult daughter McKenzie. Were that to happen, it would obviously dramatically impact how child support is structured and should be addressed and reflected in the CR2A agreement and final order of the court."

I can handle all of his manipulative moves to try and get me fired, or the things he says about the man I am or am not dating, but when he tries to pit my children against me I find that completely abhorrent behavior.  I will be silent no more!

Rewriting history to escape accountability is what he is trying to do!

He can't stand the thought of having to pay me money to take care of his children, so he already has Destina moving out....

He would have me in cahoots with the judges at the court house....

He would try and smear the name and reputation of a man he has never met, and make him out to be something he is not...

He would have me moving a strange man into the house that the children have never met...

He would have my children believing that I am trying to take the girls away from him by accusing him of something that I have never said...

He would convince otherwise rationally thinking minds that he was justified in hiring hookers...

He would make up lies to drag this divorce out and costing me thousands of dollars while he plays lawyer....

Adjustment

Originally written  July 7, 2018 - After two long painful years, I am almost divorced. I have kept a lot of feelings bottled up and now it it time for me to start writing, again.

I started a new job this week. One I am extremely grateful to have, that I have worked hard to get, and that with a lot of help from "my circle" I got.

It was hard to leave my other job, I truly loved the people I worked with and my boss became my friend and I will miss working with my little group of GAL's, attorneys and social workers.

I  have felt this adjustment in my life. I thought it was because I am giving up my flexibility, I now work 8-5 Monday-Friday and that has been the hardest adjustment from switching jobs. I am actually doing the same job just back in my county as a county employee instead of a private contractor. I traded my flexibility for benefits and retirement.

But when I was really thinking about this new adjustment it hit me that I am just covering up the elephant in the room - the biggest life adjustment I have ever made - deciding to get a divorce. I have volumes of things to write but I feel that I am coming out of this horrible "dark place" I can see the light and I am going to be okay!

I have had to trade in empty dreams and broken promises that were never going to come true. I have had to dig deep and find out what I am made of over and over again. I have had to go back, start my life all over and now at almost 50 I am beginning to set my own course, make my own decisions, and live my best life.

For the past 30 years I have lived my life for others. Putting my dreams on hold while I followed my husband around in the military, raising a family, and being a wife and mother, I think I got lost in there somewhere and I have had to find out who I am and what I want. I am not saying that the last 30 years were a mistake, I loved being a mom, I loved being at home with my kids, I planned on being home and available for my grand kids. Again, an adjustment, not an easy one.

But when I found out that the person I have been married to for almost 31 years now, we are still not divorced, has been cheating on me off and on for those 30 years, it has made me really think about the lie I had been living. The false hope of the happy family, the lost dreams of enjoying time together with, who I thought was my best friend, it is an adjustment.

When I found out that Scott was telling my children, about 2 years before he told me, how miserable he was, how "mean" I was and how unhappy he was and that he was going to get a divorce, it was an adjustment. I still have a hard time wrapping my brain around that manipulation of our children and the depth of betrayal to me that was done. He was slowly grooming them to take his side, to gain their sympathy, to look like the innocent victim, and to go against their own mother. I almost get physically ill thinking about that. He was so good at manipulation that when he told the kids he hired hookers they felt he was justified. They believed every huge lie, laced with a little bit of truth, he fed them. He set out to destroy me so that his misdeeds would go unnoticed. It changed my relationship with my children, and that was an adjustment.

I have finally started to see the light at the end of this dark tunnel, I am stronger than I ever though possible. I have survived daily panic attacks, worked my way through school, almost there, and landed the job I set my sights on several years ago. All that while fighting for my what has felt like my life.

I have felt loved and guided along the way. I have "my circle" of close friends that take me on my good and bad days, probably more bad days. I have relied on them and they have been there for me every step of the way. I have old friends that check in on my to make sure I am ok and to let me know they are thinking of me. I have new friends that challenge who I am and make me think differently. I have one friend that is so brutally honest with me, that keeps it real for me at all times.

I have lost friends, I have lost an entire side of my family...people I dearly loved that haven't even bothered to see how I am doing. They bought the whole innocent victim story from the master manipulator. That has been an adjustment.

I don't fit with the married crowd and I don't fit with the singles crowd, I am in no man's land.  I have been in this place of not belonging, not fitting in, and not sure I want to fit in anymore and that has been an adjustment.

So as I adjusted to getting up early and going off to work this week, I kept reminding myself of all that I have accomplished, I raised seven pretty awesome kids, I worked full-time, and went back to school full-time and adjusted to being a single parent, and I changed the direction of my life! There was a smile and a cheerfulness about me and a knowledge of no matter what happens I will be just fine!
